A variation on our Sumatra medium roast. Crafted for those who enjoy Sumatran coffee but desire the subtle smokiness of a dark roast, Café Altura Sumatra Dark offers the earthy and spicy flavors of Sumatran coffee with a slightly more developed roast profile.

Gayo Mandiri Cooperative - Family-owned farms organized around the KSU Gayo Mandiri cooperative located in the Bener Meriah regency within the Aceh district, on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. KSU Gayo Mandiri was founded in 2008 and currently has 1218 members. On average, producers cultivate coffee on 2.5 acres of land using their own micro-mills to depulp and dry coffee. The cooperative hosts regular trainings on best agricultural practices to assist small producers with their organic certification while improving the quality of their coffee. KSU Gayo Mandiri also invest premiums generated from certifications in roads to help producers overcome problems transporting their coffee. The cooperative also recently purchased an ambulance to improve access to emergency healthcare.

This is some of the best coffee we have ever tasted. Definitely worth buying.

Best Coffee

I have tried most of your coffee but come back to this one. It is perhaps the darkest roast and if I didn't use 1/2 & 1/2, I don't think it would work. I use 1.3 oz of medium grind in a cone filter ( Clever Coffee Dripper) and it's very satisfying.

It would be impossible to make a bad cup of coffee with dark roast Sumatra and a french press. I should know -- I've tried! Use too much or too few grounds, too much or too little water, or leave it steeping too long. It's still the best tasting morning get-your-day-going coffee you can find. Foolproof even when you're sleepy or in a big hurry, this is the best, most forgiving, most delicious brew ever.

The Best, hands down!

Close to 20 years I have relied on Cafe Altura to provide the most delicious and Earth Friendly coffee beans IN THE WORLD! And they have never fallen short. The Sumatra Dark Roast is scrumptious, low acidity, FULL bodied, and not at all bitter. I use about a cup of full beans per 9 cups of water, and it is perfect every time! The (used to be 4 lbs) 5 pound bag is exceptional in value and storage. As a single guy it will last me a while, but with the sealable bag it keeps fresh week after week. I will NOT buy another brand since Cafe Altura is both a great cost and a great company; trying to attain sustainability on our planet while supporting indigenous populations.
